TBT memory: While living in Portugal, one simply cannot miss the opportunity to visit Guimarães—the birthplace of the nation, where Afonso I, the first king of Portugal, was born. During my time there, I embarked on a day trip from Porto to explore this enchanting city, and what I discovered was a journey through time and tradition.

Architectural Marvels

Guimarães wears its history proudly. As you explore, marvel at:

  • Guimarães Castle: Dating back to the 10th century, this castle stands as a testament to Portugal’s birth.

  • Church of São Miguel do Castelo: A Gothic-Romanesque gem with intricate details.

  • Ducal Palace (Paço dos Duques de Bragança): A striking building that once housed royalty.

Time-Honored Traditions

Guimarães is steeped in tradition:

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site: The well-preserved Old Town is a designated UNESCO site.

  • “Aqui Nasceu Portugal”: As you enter Guimarães, you’ll see this sign—meaning “Here Portugal was born.”

  • Churches and Museums: Explore works by renowned Portuguese artists in local churches and museums.

As I wandered through the narrow streets of Guimarães' historic centre, I was transported back in time to the days of knights and kings. The city's architecture is a testament to its medieval past, with towering castles, ornate churches, and charming cobblestone plazas at every turn.

The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the Guimarães Castle, a majestic fortress perched atop a hill overlooking the city. Nearby, the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, a grand palace adorned with intricate carvings and lush gardens, offered a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Portugal's nobility.
