Embarking on a journey to uncover the storied past of Porto, I set out on foot, eager to immerse myself in the timeless beauty and fascinating history that awaited me in the heart of this enchanting Portuguese city. With each step, I discovered layers of history woven into the very fabric of its cobblestone streets, each corner revealing a new chapter in Porto's captivating tale.

As I meander through the narrow, cobbled streets of Porto’s historical city centre, each step feels like a journey back in time. The city, one of the oldest in Europe, whispers tales of its past with every stone and corner. It’s a place where history isn’t just studied; it’s lived and breathed.

The name ‘Porto’ traces back to its Roman roots, derived from ‘Portus Cale,’ which referred to the port and the settlement around it. This name not only gave rise to the city’s current name but also to the country’s name, Portugal. It’s fascinating to think that the entire nation’s identity sprang from this vibrant city’s ancient port.

The Historical City Center: A UNESCO Heritage

Walking through the historical centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996, is like flipping through the pages of a living history book. The area, comprising the parishes of Sé, Vitória, São Nicolau, and Miragaia, is a treasure trove of cultural wealth. The people of Porto are affectionately known as ‘tripeiros,’  or "tripe eaters," a nickname, a term that harks back to a time of sacrifice and solidarity. In 1415, the citizens generously donated all their quality meat to the armada of Infante D. Henrique, during the Age of Discovery, leaving only the tripe for themselves. This act of giving, which supported Portugal’s conquest of Ceuta, earned them this enduring nickname, that endures to this day, serving as a reminder of Porto's humble origins and the resilience of its people.
