The Legend: In 44 AD, during the transport of Santiago's body from Palestine to Galicia, a remarkable event unfolded at Matosinhos beach. Amidst a grand wedding celebration, Roman lord Cayo Carpo and his companions encountered a miraculous sight. Cayo's horse, driven by an unseen force, ventured into the sea, leading him to a vessel carrying Santiago's remains. Inspired by this divine encounter, Cayo embraced Christianity, only to return to the beach and mysteriously vanish beneath the waves, emerging adorned with scallop shells.

As Cayo emerged from the water, covered in scallop shells, the beach became known as "Praia do Matizadinho," eventually evolving into "Matosinhos."
