#TBT to one of my cherished travel memories – exploring the hidden gem of Viana do Castelo. This enchanting city, with its understated elegance and charm, has become a part of my travel memories, a chapter in my story that I’ll always revisit with a smile.

Nestled in the north of Portugal, this enchanting city often takes a backseat to its more famous neighbour, Braga. But let me tell you, Viana do Castelo is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered, and it's the perfect destination for a day trip from Porto.

As I meandered through the cobblestone streets of Viana do Castelo, I felt like I had stumbled upon a secret oasis. Away from the hustle and bustle of tourist crowds, the city exuded a sense of tranquillity and authenticity that immediately captivated my heart. Every corner seemed to whisper tales of centuries past, from the majestic Castelo de Santiago da Barra guarding the coastline to the serene Templo de Santa Luzia, perched atop a hill with panoramic views, one of the highlights of my visit, perched atop a hill overlooking the city and the shimmering waters of the Atlantic Ocean. As I gazed out at the breathtaking panoramic views, I felt a sense of peace wash over me – a moment I'll always treasure. Every corner of Viana do Castelo is steeped in history and culture. The modern Cultural Center of Viana do Castelo, designed by the renowned architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, stands as a testament to the city’s ongoing dialogue between its historical past and innovative future.

But amidst the historical splendour, it was the small delights that truly captured my attention. Who could forget the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked 'Bolas de Berlim'? These sugar-dusted delicacies, filled with creamy egg custard, are a quintessential part of Viana's culinary heritage, offering a taste of tradition with every bite.

As I continued my explorations, I marvelled at the architectural tapestry that defines Viana do Castelo. From the medieval alleyways of its historic centre to the grandeur of the Praça da República adorned with Renaissance facades, the city seamlessly blends the old with the new. And let's not overlook the modern marvels, like the Cultural Center of Viana do Castelo, a testament to the city's commitment to innovation and cultural enrichment.

Of course, no visit to Viana do Castelo would be complete without indulging in its gastronomic delights. From the iconic 'Bacalhau à Viana' to the savoury 'Arroz de Polvo' and grilled 'Sardinha Assada', each dish tells a story of the region's rich maritime heritage. And what better way to complement these culinary delights than with a glass of Vinho Verde, a crisp and refreshing wine that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the region?

But beyond its architectural wonders and culinary treasures, what truly sets Viana do Castelo apart is its vibrant festival scene. Whether you're joining the colourful processions of the 'Romaria da Senhora d'Agonia', immersing yourself in the folkloric traditions of the 'Festival de Folclore Alto Minho', or dancing the night away at the 'Neopop Festival', there's always a celebration waiting to be discovered.

But perhaps what made my experience in Viana do Castelo truly special was the warmth and hospitality of the locals. From the moment I stepped foot in the city, I was greeted with genuine smiles and friendly conversations. It felt as though I was being welcomed into the homes of newfound friends, each eager to share their love for their beloved city.

So here's to Viana do Castelo – a destination that left me with memories to last a lifetime. And to all you fellow travellers out there, don't overlook this hidden gem on your next trip to Portugal. Trust me, you won't regret it.
